As writers when we publish any of our work we need to take a number of things into consideration. We need to think about layout, design, use of colour, font size and type, the use of graphics and much more. The following activities will help you develop guidelines that you can use when you publish your own texts.
Task 1 - Think of a topic that you are interested in. You now need to search the internet to find a website about your interest that you think shows a good publishing format and one that shows a poor publishing format. Think about the fonts, colours, layout, text size and graphics. Take a screen shot of each of them and put them onto a Comic Life page. Label the features that you think are good/poor.
Task 2 - Think about the feelings or moods that different colours create. Yellow makes us think of happy things and blue makes us feel calm. Think of six different emotions. Create another Comic Life page and make six boxes. In each box write one of your six emotions. Now find fonts and colours you think match that emotion.
Task 3 - Create a third Comic Life page. Create a cover of a book or magazine or create a movie or tv show poster. Take into consideration when you are choosing your colours and fonts the mood that you are trying to 'sell' for your chosen book/movie/tv show/magazine. Where is it effective to place your headings and graphics? Can your colours be read easily on the background? Refer back to your website from task 1 to see if you have been effective in designing your own cover/poster. Think about your audience - what colours and font would attract them?
Word Wizard - make sure words make sense, cheap words into expensive words, adding words like adjectives, adverbs.
Spelling Sleuth - make sure the spelling is correct.
Punctuation Police - check for paragraphs, full stops, direct speech, commas.
Grammar Guru - makes sure sentences sound right, tense is correct.
Manager - oversees everyone, makes sure everyone is doing their jobs.

You are to write a recount about one of your experiences on Canberra Camp. Use the Jenny Eather Writing Fun website below to help you plan your recount, and to remind you about the features of a recount.
Your recount is to include the following:
An introduction - who, what, where, when, why
A paragraph containing some background information about the experience you are writing about - you can use information collected by your teacher or by yourself whilst on camp, information from the internet or information from your little white Parliament book. This information is to be put in your own words.
One or two paragraphs about that you did at the place you have chosen.
A final paragraph reflecting on the experience and why you chose to write about it. Did the experience help you gain further understanding about 'leadership'? If so, write about how.
Remember to fully proofread your work before you show it to your teacher. Use interesting words to make your recount more enjoyable to read.
